Four-time Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen has announced he will continue racing for Red Bull next year, ending months of rumours about his future.

The confirmation came just days before the Hungarian Grand Prix and brings stability to the team during a season of big changes.

Verstappen, who has a contract with Red Bull until 2028, said he has already been discussing plans for next season with the team. His statement follows weeks of speculation that a performance clause might allow him to leave early, though those details have never been confirmed.

This news comes shortly after Red Bull replaced long-time team principal Christian Horner with Laurent Mekies. Verstappen made it clear that Horner’s departure had no impact on his decision to stay.

Red Bull has relied heavily on Verstappen’s success this season. He has scored 185 of the team’s 192 points, while teammate Yuki Tsunoda has gone six races without scoring. With major Formula 1 rule changes arriving in 2026, keeping Verstappen is a boost for the team’s preparations.

Rumours had linked Verstappen with Mercedes, especially after his yacht was spotted near that of Mercedes boss Toto Wolff in Sardinia. Verstappen dismissed the gossip, saying friendships can exist without working together.

With Verstappen staying put, Mercedes is now more likely to extend contracts for its current drivers, George Russell and rookie Kimi Antonelli, who are signed only until the end of 2025.

Verstappen is set to compete in his 200th race for Red Bull this Sunday.
