New Zealand sprinter Danielle Aitchison has set a new Paralympic record in the 200m event at the Paris Games.

The 23-year-old from Morrinsville clocked 28.21 seconds, beating the previous record by 0.1 seconds and securing the fastest qualifying time for the final on Sunday night (NZT).

Aitchison’s impressive time was much quicker than her silver medal performance at the Tokyo Games three years ago, where she ran 29.88 seconds. Her main competitor is Tokyo gold medallist Shi Yiting, who qualified second with a time of 28.87 seconds.

Aitchison came to Paris in top form, having already set a world record at the Kobe 2024 Para-Athletics World Championships in May, where she won gold in the 200m T64 classification. This record-breaking performance shows Aitchison is a strong contender for the gold medal.
