Protests in Los Angeles

More than 50 people have been arrested in Los Angeles after several days of protests, which began on Friday following immigration raids in Latino neighbourhoods. U.S. President Donald Trump sent 2,000 National Guard troops to the city, and later ordered another 2,000 troops and 700 marines. The decision has caused disagreement between the White House and California officials.

The protests began after immigration officers arrested over 100 people, mostly in areas where many Latino families live. While the first protests were peaceful, things turned violent over the weekend. Police declared parts of downtown LA an “unlawful assembly” area.

ICE has arrested hundreds of people in recent weeks and aims to reach thousands per day. Some raids have taken place at workplaces like restaurants and shops. Critics say the actions have gone too far, with legal residents and innocent people affected.

While some people support Trump’s strict immigration policy, many others believe the current actions are unfair and harmful to communities. The protests in LA are part of a larger national debate about how immigration should be handled in the United States.
