Orcas Visit Napier Estuary

A pod of orcas made a surprise appearance in Napier’s inner estuary this morning, drawing a crowd of more than 100 people eager to see the rare event.

The whales arrived just before 10am and were closely watched by marine experts and local iwi.

The shallow waters of the estuary made navigation tricky for the orcas. Groups like Project Jonah NZ and the Department of Conservation quickly stepped in to monitor their movements and ensure the whales stayed safe. With the help of the incoming tide, the pod was later able to swim back out to sea.

People gathered at Pandora Pond to watch the orcas from the shore. Local photographer Kirsten Simcox described the moment as magical, with everyone quietly admiring the animals. “There were big crowds, and here were these orca right in front of us,” she said.

Project Jonah praised the calm and respectful behaviour of onlookers. They reminded everyone that giving marine animals space is important, especially in shallow or risky waters.

The pod’s visit was unusual but exciting, and it ended safely thanks to the teamwork of local helpers and marine experts.
