Welcome to Day 7 of the Olympics in Paris! New Zealand athletes had another action-packed day with medal hopes in several sports including rowing, sailing, and BMX racing.
Athletics:
In athletics, Tom Walsh and Jacko Gill qualified for the Men’s Shotput final. Tom Walsh achieved a throw of 21.48 meters in his second attempt, while Jacko Gill managed 21.35 meters, ensuring their places in the finals.
Zoe Hobbs sprinted into the 100m semi-finals with a season-best time of 11.08 seconds. Sam Tanner, however, will compete in the 1500m repechage after placing 13th in his heat.
BMX Racing:
BMX Racing saw Rico Bearman finish 11th in the semi-finals, just missing out on the top eight spots needed to advance to the final. Despite his best run time of 32.626 seconds, it wasn’t enough to move forward.
Gymnastics:
In gymnastics, Dylan Schmidt placed eighth in the Men’s Trampoline final. After a strong start, Schmidt unfortunately fell during his final routine. Ivan Litvinovich from AIN took the gold medal. Meanwhile, Madaline Davidson put on a solid performance in the Women’s Trampoline final, finishing seventh overall.
Hockey and Canoe Slalom:
Hockey saw the New Zealand men’s team fall 2-1 to Ireland in their last Pool B match, ending their Olympic journey without advancing further. Joe Morrison scored New Zealand’s only goal in the 5th minute. In canoe slalom, Luuka Jones and Finn Butcher participated in the Kayak Cross (KX) Time Trial, placing fourth and sixth, respectively. Their rankings will determine their seedings for tomorrow’s first round.
Sailing:
New Zealand’s sailing team celebrated a silver medal victory in the Men’s Skiff (49er) event, with Isaac McHardie and William McKenzie finishing strong. In the same category, Spain took the gold and the USA claimed the bronze. The Women’s Skiff crew, Jo Aleh and Molly Meech, ended their campaign in seventh place overall.
In rowing, Shannon Cox and Jackie Kiddle finished fourth in the Women’s Lightweight Double Sculls final with a time of 6:51.65. Meanwhile, the Men’s Pair of Phil Wilson and Dan Williamson concluded their events on a high note, winning the B Final in 6:24.55.
Swimming and Judo:
In swimming, Erika Fairweather advanced to the 800m Freestyle final, securing third in her heat. Unfortunately, Eve Thomas and Cameron Gray did not progress in their respective events.
Finally, in judo, Sydnee Andrews made a strong Olympic debut but was eliminated in the Women’s +78kg category by Bosnia & Herzegovina’s Larisa Ceric in the Round of 32.
Stay tuned for more updates and support for the New Zealand team as they continue their Olympic journey!
