The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) recently flew supplies such as medical gear, mosquito nets, books, and clothing to remote parts of Papua New Guinea (PNG). This mission took place over two weeks during PNG’s 50th anniversary of independence.
A large C-130J Hercules aircraft and two NH90 helicopters were used to reach areas that are difficult to access by road or regular planes. The NZDF worked closely with local groups like Rotarians Against Malaria to make sure the items reached the people who needed them most.
Flight Lieutenant Mick Wansink said flying into tiny island airstrips was a challenge for the crew, but also a rewarding experience. The NH90 helicopters carried around 2,000 kilograms of mosquito nets to help fight malaria, a dangerous disease common in PNG.
In one special delivery, the helicopters moved an 800kg mini-excavator across a lagoon to help farmers in a remote village called Keapara. Without the helicopter, moving the heavy machine would have been nearly impossible.
Temperatures in PNG reached about 30°C each day, making the work tough for both pilots and ground crews. Flight Lieutenant Paul Robinson praised his team for staying strong and focused during the mission.
An RNZAF Boeing 757 also brought military bands from Fiji, Tonga, and Vanuatu to join PNG’s celebration events.
Air Commodore Andy Scott said it was an honour to support New Zealand’s Pacific neighbours during such an important event. He praised all the crews for their hard work in challenging conditions.
