Richie Mo’unga has confirmed he will return from Japan to play for Canterbury in 2026 and the Crusaders in 2027.
The 31-year-old, who has played 57 Tests for the All Blacks, has signed an 18-month deal that will make him eligible for national selection from October 2026, just in time for the Bledisloe Cup and the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia.
Mo’unga left New Zealand after the 2023 World Cup to play for Japan’s Toshiba Brave Lupus, where he will remain for one more season. His return is big news for New Zealand Rugby, which has been eager to bring him back. However, because of eligibility rules, he will miss next year’s Nations Cup and the “Greatest Rivalry” tour in South Africa.
During his earlier career with the Crusaders, Mo’unga played 109 matches, scored 1,230 points, and helped the team win seven titles in a row. Known as one of the most influential players in Super Rugby history, he says he is excited to reconnect with fans and continue the Crusaders’ winning tradition.
While some fans wonder why his contract does not extend to the 2029 British and Irish Lions tour, Mo’unga says his focus is on giving his best for Canterbury, the Crusaders, and possibly the All Blacks when he returns.
Crusaders coach Rob Penney said Mo’unga’s leadership will inspire younger players, and New Zealand Rugby CEO Mark Robinson called him “a proven talent with a strong track record.”
