New Zealand driver Liam Lawson finished an impressive eighth at the Hungarian Grand Prix, beating world champion Max Verstappen.

The 23-year-old Racing Bulls driver has now scored points in three of the last four races.

Lando Norris won the race for McLaren, holding off teammate Oscar Piastri by less than a second in a tense final lap. It was McLaren’s 200th Formula 1 win and their fourth one-two finish in a row.

Lawson started in ninth and passed Verstappen on the opening lap. Although Verstappen briefly took the spot back, Lawson regained it later when Verstappen made a pit stop. Verstappen ended the race in ninth after a difficult weekend.

Norris, who started well but dropped to fifth, managed to save his tires and only stopped once during the race. Piastri stopped twice and closed the gap near the end, even locking his brakes while trying to pass, but Norris held on.

“Good racing. Good strategy. Good call,” Norris said after the race, which cut Piastri’s lead in the championship standings from 16 to 9 points.

George Russell finished third for Mercedes after a tight battle with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who ended up fourth and received a time penalty for nearly causing a crash.

Aston Martin had a strong race, with Fernando Alonso finishing fifth and Lance Stroll seventh. Gabriel Bortoleto surprised fans by taking sixth for Sauber.
