La Tomatina is a famous festival held every year in Buñol, Spain, where thousands of participants throw tomatoes at each other.

Known as the world’s biggest food fight, it attracts tourists from all over the globe. This year’s event will take place on August 28, 2024, during the last Wednesday of August.

The origins of La Tomatina date back to August 29, 1945. During a cultural parade in Buñol, an argument broke out between two groups of teenage boys. One group, upset after losing a spot in the parade, started throwing tomatoes in a playful act of rebellion. The tomato fight continued each year, with participants bringing their own tomatoes until the town council eventually provided the fruit, making it an official celebration.

The festival began as a harmless prank, but it quickly grew in popularity, symbolising rebellion and fun during a time of strict rules and poverty under Spain’s dictator, Francisco Franco. Although the town council tried to stop the festival by canceling the parade the next year, the boys still showed up with tomatoes, and the tradition continued.

Today, La Tomatina is a joyful event enjoyed by locals and tourists alike, turning the streets of Buñol into a sea of red and bringing people together for one of the most unique celebrations in the world.
