Fabian Holland, a 23-year-old rugby player from New Zealand, has been named World Rugby’s Breakthrough Player of the Year for 2025.
Holland, who was born in the Netherlands, played in 12 of the All Blacks’ 13 Test matches this year, including a big win over Wales in Cardiff.
Holland moved to New Zealand at the age of 16 to follow his dream of becoming an All Black. He made his debut in July against France, where he played the entire match, made 16 tackles, and worked hard at 40 rucks.
At 2.04 metres tall, Holland plays in the lock position and is known for his strength and consistency. He won the award ahead of strong players from South Africa, England, and Australia.
His coach, Scott Robertson, praised him, saying Holland’s journey is like a movie. He added that Holland’s success comes from his determination and hard work, not luck.
This is the second time in 2025 a New Zealand player has won a breakthrough award. Braxton Sorenson-McGee earned the same title in the women’s game after the World Cup.
Meanwhile, South Africa’s Malcolm Marx was named Men’s Player of the Year.
