Carlos Alcaraz and Coco Gauff are the new champions of the French Open, winning the top prizes at Roland Garros in thrilling matches. Gauff, age 21, and Alcaraz, 22, are now leading the next generation of tennis stars.
Gauff defeated Aryna Sabalenka in the women’s final, using strong and smart play to cause her opponent to make 70 errors. This is Gauff’s second Grand Slam title after winning the US Open in 2023. Her win follows Madison Keys’ Australian Open victory, making it a strong year for American women’s tennis.
On the men’s side, Alcaraz outlasted Italy’s Jannik Sinner in a five-set battle that lasted 5 hours and 29 minutes. The match was one of the longest and most exciting in recent years. This marks Alcaraz’s fifth Grand Slam win, tying him with Spanish legend Rafael Nadal at the same age.
Gauff and Sabalenka are becoming fierce competitors, with Iga Swiatek also in the mix. In men’s tennis, Alcaraz and Sinner have split the last six Grand Slams.
Other surprises included Lois Boisson, a 22-year-old French player ranked 361 in the world, who made it to the top 70 after an amazing run. American men Frances Tiafoe and Tommy Paul also made history by reaching the quarterfinals — something no American man had done since 2003.
