Digital signs to show weather

More than 500 digital billboards around New Zealand will now display live weather warnings during storms and other severe weather events. The new system is a partnership between MetService and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), helping to keep people informed and safe.

The billboards will show real-time alerts and safety advice, alongside regular messages seen on apps, websites, TV, radio, and social media. The goal is to reach more people, especially when quick action is needed.

MetService’s Kathryn Blackmore said the digital signs can even target specific regions, much like the Emergency Mobile Alerts sent to phones. This means people in areas most at risk will get the warnings they need.

John Price from NEMA explained that with climate change causing more frequent and dangerous weather, sharing early warnings is more important than ever. “This is about keeping people, homes, and communities safe,” he said.

By spreading the word through more channels, emergency services hope everyone will have the time and information they need to prepare and stay safe.
