A couple from Christchurch, New Zealand, will receive $40,000 after finding a large amount of cash hidden in the ceiling of their home.
The discovery happened in May 2022 while an electrician was working in the roof space of the house, which the couple had bought in December 2021. Five dusty plastic bags filled with money were found above the ceiling. The couple quickly contacted the police.
When officers checked the bags, they counted $232,440 in cash, mostly made up of $50 notes. Police believed the money was likely linked to crime, possibly from drug dealing. Because of this, they asked the High Court in February 2024 for permission to keep the money.
The homeowners disagreed and said they should have some rights to the cash because they had found it in their house. Lawyers from both sides shared evidence and explained their arguments in court. A judge then took time to consider the case.
Later, the two sides discussed the matter and reached an agreement. The settlement was sent to the High Court for approval. Justice Robert Osborne agreed that the deal was fair.
Under the agreement, the government will keep the $232,440, but the couple will be paid $40,000. The judge said rewarding honest people who report finding money can help encourage others to do the right thing.
