New Zealand skier Alice Robinson has made history by winning her first Super G World Cup race in St. Moritz, Switzerland. The 24-year-old raced at high speed on the Corviglia piste, beating top skiers including American legend Lindsey Vonn. This was the first time a New Zealander has ever reached the Super G World Cup podium.
Robinson, from Queenstown, had already won two recent Giant Slalom races. Now, she has shown her talent in the faster Super G event. She was the sixth skier to race and sped down the slope at over 100km/h. Her time was almost a full second faster than the next skier, and none of the 11 athletes after her could beat it.
The track was in great condition thanks to cold overnight weather. Robinson said she tried to treat the Super G like a Giant Slalom race to help her focus. She shared that her success came from combining the speed skills she learned in downhill with her strong Giant Slalom technique.
France’s Romane Miradoli came second, just 0.08 seconds behind Robinson, while Sofia Goggia of Italy was third, 0.19 seconds back.
This victory is Robinson’s seventh World Cup win and her first outside of Giant Slalom. It marks a new milestone in her skiing career and a proud moment for New Zealand sport.
