Ahmedabad, a large city in western India, has been recommended to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games. This decision was announced by the Commonwealth Sport executive board and will be voted on by all member countries during a meeting in Glasgow on 26 November.
The 2030 Games are special because they mark 100 years since the first Commonwealth Games were held in Hamilton, Canada. Although Canada was expected to take part in the bidding, it did not enter a proposal. Instead, two cities competed – Ahmedabad in India and Abuja in Nigeria. After reviewing both bids, the board chose Ahmedabad.
India has promised to organise an exciting and inclusive event, showing off the wide range of countries and cultures in the Commonwealth. This will be the second time India hosts the Games; the first was in Delhi in 2010.
Ahmedabad’s selection comes at a time when the Commonwealth Games are facing challenges. The 2026 Games will be smaller than usual, hosted by Glasgow after the original host, Victoria in Australia, withdrew due to rising costs.
Nigeria, although not chosen this time, is still being supported by the board to possibly host the 2034 Games.
