The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has confirmed that certain Russian athletes will be permitted to compete in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
This decision takes into account the ongoing Ukraine conflict that had raised questions about Russia’s participation.
The IOC’s ruling underscores its ongoing efforts to reintegrate Russia into the global sporting arena.
Eligible athletes are those who have not actively supported the war in Ukraine and maintain no affiliations with military or state security agencies. Among the 4,600 athletes who have qualified for the Summer Games in Paris, eight Russians and three from Belarus fall into this category.
However, it is important to note that only a minimal number of Russian athletes are expected to meet the criteria and qualify for the Paris Olympics. Team sports continue to be off-limits for Russian participants.
Athletes granted neutral status will be required to compete without displaying their national identity, including their flag, anthem, or national colors. In line with these guidelines, the International Gymnastics Federation has mandated that athletes with neutral status wear light blue uniforms to symbolize their neutrality.
