In a stunning achievement, Lionel Messi has secured the Men’s Ballon d’Or, one of football’s most prestigious individual awards, for the eighth time. The award recognizes the world’s best footballer and is determined through the votes of 100 journalists from across the globe.
At the age of 36, Messi holds three more Ballon d’Or titles than any other player. Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi’s closest rival, has five Ballon d’Or wins to his name, with his most recent triumph in 2017. However, he didn’t make the shortlist for the award this year.
David Beckham presented Messi with the prestigious trophy at a ceremony held in Paris. During the presentation, Messi expressed his appreciation for the recognition and paid tribute to the late Sir Bobby Charlton, a former England World Cup winner who passed away at the age of 86 earlier this month.
Aitana Bonmati Awarded Women’s Ballon d’Or
In the Women’s Ballon d’Or category, Aitana Bonmati from Spain emerged victorious, marking her first win of the award. Bonmati, aged 25, enjoyed an immensely successful year, contributing to her club’s victories in the Spanish top-flight and the Champions League. She also played a pivotal role in her national team’s World Cup win during the summer.
In August, Bonmati was named UEFA’s Player of the Year. She scored three goals during the tournament in Australia and New Zealand, helping Spain secure victory over England in the final.
