New Zealand has joined international calls for a “humanitarian pause” in Gaza, urging a cessation of hostilities to allow life-saving supplies to reach civilians and establish safe areas protected from military targeting.

This statement was delivered to the United Nations Security Council by New Zealand’s Permanent Representative, Carolyn Schwalger, following consultation with incoming Prime Minister Chris Luxon.

New Zealand’s Prime Minister, Chris Hipkins, emphasized the importance of acting in accordance with international law and providing essential support to innocent civilians in Gaza.

The country also called for the immediate release of hostages held by Hamas, condemning their actions. Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta stressed the need for both sides to act in compliance with international law, support Israel’s right to self-defense, and prioritize civilian protection.

New Zealand expressed support for restarting the Middle East Peace Process for lasting peace. Chris Luxon reiterated New Zealand’s condemnation of Hamas’ attacks and emphasized the importance of protecting civilians.

The New Zealand government also pledged $5 million for urgent humanitarian needs in Israel, Gaza, and the West Bank.
