Supporters of Sir Tim Shadbolt, the former mayor of Invercargill, have proposed renaming Invercargill Airport in his honor. They believe this would be an ideal way to pay tribute to his long-term commitment and contributions to the city.

Invercargill Airport, located in the southernmost part of New Zealand, has a special significance as it symbolizes Sir Tim’s efforts to connect Invercargill with the rest of the country. He championed the extension of the airport’s runway as one of his significant initiatives during his time as mayor.

Invercargill has a tradition of recognizing its prominent figures through various public and civic honors, such as naming the Eve Poole Library after a former mayor.

The Invercargill City Council has acknowledged the proposal and is open to discussions regarding this idea. They are working with their colleagues at the airport to explore the possibilities. At this early stage, they have not yet entered into detailed discussions.

Sir Tim Shadbolt holds the distinction of being New Zealand’s second-longest-serving mayor, having served two terms from 1993-1995 and 1998-2022.
