A weasel has been found dead in a trap inside the Zealandia conservation sanctuary in Wellington.

The pest was discovered during a routine check of traps set as part of Zealandia’s biosecurity measures.

While the exact entry point for the weasel into the sanctuary was not known, the staff was conducting searches to identify any potential entry routes.

Weasels can have a devastating impact on native wildlife by hunting birds, insects, and lizards.

Zealandia is dedicated to protecting and restoring New Zealand’s native flora and fauna.
