Auckland Zoo had an unexpected visit from the fire department after one of its female orangutans, Daya, accidentally triggered the sprinkler system and fire alarm in the South East Asia Jungle Track high canopy habitat.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand arrived promptly, disabling the alarm and sprinklers. Auckland Zoo reassured that neither Daya, the other orangutans, nor the staff were ever in danger.

Orangutans are known for their intelligence, curiosity, and dexterity. The zoo stated that they would investigate measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

Daya, who is described as “lovely natured, quite shy and sensitive,” is 11 years old and arrived at Auckland Zoo from Ouwehands Zoo in The Netherlands earlier this year.
