Kiwi experience stopped at Miami Zoo

We have some important news from Zoo Miami, but also a cautionary tale about our feathered friends, the kiwis.

Recently, there was a mix-up during the kiwi encounters that made everyone take a step back and learn an important lesson.

Imagine this: visitors gathered around a kiwi bird named Paora under bright lights during the nighttime. Wait a minute, that doesn’t sound right! Kiwis are nocturnal creatures, meaning they are most active when the sun goes down. It’s like asking an owl to play in the daytime!

In a video that the zoo shared on social media, a zookeeper mentioned how much the kiwi loved being petted, just like a little dog. However, wildlife experts and the Department of Conservation stepped in, expressing their concern about the bird’s well-being.

Did you know that Paora, the kiwi bird, was named after a special person? Paora Haitana, an environmentalist and iwi leader from New Zealand, was honored when the kiwi hatched in 2019. He wanted the bird to be cared for just like they are in their native land.

But here’s where the story takes a turn. The zoo’s plan to let visitors interact with the kiwi under bright lights turned out to be a mistake. The lights were not what the kiwi needed, and it made people upset. The Department of Conservation even took the matter seriously!

To make things right, the zoo decided to stop the kiwi encounters right away. Ron Magill, the zoo’s communications director, admitted they made a big mistake. He said, “We have offended a nation, and this has to stop immediately.” He felt really sorry and promised that it wouldn’t happen again.

Now, Paora the kiwi is getting all the care it deserves. It has a cozy enclosure where no one can touch it, and there are no more bright lights bothering our nocturnal friend. The zoo is doing its best to make amends and keep the kiwi safe and happy.
