Large dogs allowed on Auckland buses

Starting this week, large dogs with leads and approved muzzles will be allowed on Auckland Transport (AT) buses as part of a trial period.

This decision came after AT had a super successful trial called “Pets on Buses” with smaller pets in carriers. People loved it, and now small domestic pets in approved carriers are permanently allowed on AT buses. And if the eight-week trial for large dogs goes well, AT is considering letting them onboard permanently too.

Councillor Josephine Bartley is thrilled about these changes. She said, “Changes like this make catching public transport an option for more people.” She believes that this move will make Auckland an even more pet-friendly city. In fact, Councillor Bartley can’t wait to take her adorable dog, Milo, on the bus very soon.

Luke Clarke from AT is also excited about this new development. He said, “We’re excited to see larger four-legged passengers joining their owners on our buses.”

Just so you know, large dogs are already allowed on Auckland’s trains and ferries, as long as they have an approved muzzle and lead. Smaller pets are also welcome on trains and ferries if they’re in an approved carrier. It’s all about keeping everyone safe and happy during their travels.

So, if you have a big doggie companion and you need to catch a bus in Auckland, you’re in luck! Remember to have them on a lead and wearing an approved muzzle, and you’ll be good to go.
