New Zealand’s planned Erebus memorial has been delayed after the Parnell rose gardens suffered significant damage from recent weather events in Auckland.

The memorial was set to be built at Dove Myer-Robinson park in Parnell, Auckland, and would commemorate the 237 passengers and 20 crew who lost their lives when an Air New Zealand flight crashed into Antarctica’s Mt Erebus in 1979.

However, after updated geotechnical engineering advice, it was deemed no longer safe to construct the memorial at the original site.

A new site for the memorial will need to be found. Laulu Mac Leauanae, spokesperson for the Ministry for Culture and Heritage, has reassured the Erebus families that his team is committed to finding a new and enduring location for the National Erebus Memorial.
