Eden Park may get a roof

Eden Park, the city’s biggest sports venue, has unveiled a plan for a major makeover called Eden Park 2.0.

The plan has been in the works for five years and includes a retractable roof and new stands. The Eden Park Trust Board hopes that the plan will start a conversation about the future of sports stadiums in New Zealand.

But here’s the catch: the plan can only go ahead if the government and Auckland Council can fund it. That means they need to work together to support the project. But the chairman of the board, Doug McKay, is confident that if they do, it will be worth it.

The plan includes a new North Stand, upgraded East and West stands, and a field that can be used for both rectangle and oval sports. There will also be variable seating capacities and a retractable roof. McKay believes that revamping Eden Park will cost only 40-50% of building a new stadium.

But not everyone is on board with the plan. Some Sandringham locals say that the stadium has outgrown its suburban location. The stadium is privately owned by the Eden Park Trust Board, but it receives significant financial support from the Auckland Council.

Despite the challenges, deputy mayor Desley Simpson thinks the concept is exciting for the city and will stimulate debate about the future of sports stadiums in Auckland. The Eden Park Trust Board hopes that their plan will be the start of something big for the city’s sports fans.
