It broke records not only for the best start for a video game movie, but also for the best opening weekend for any animated film ever! Disney’s Frozen II used to hold that title, but not anymore.
Variety reported that The Super Mario Bros. Movie had a production budget of $100 million, which is pretty “economical” for an animated film of this magnitude.
But wait, there’s more! The film even ends with a sneaky teaser for a potential sequel! And with Nintendo already talking openly about making more movies, it seems like this is just the beginning of the Super Mario Bros. Movie franchise.
