Ruapehu District in New Zealand is joining forces with nearby Whanganui to attract filmmakers and grow its economy.
A new partnership between Ruapehu and Whanganui’s economic agency, Whanganui & Partners, will help create new business opportunities and bring more jobs to the region. One of the main goals is to make Ruapehu a popular place for film production.
Ruapehu’s stunning landscapes—like its native forests, alpine slopes, and quiet rivers—are already famous. In fact, Mount Ngauruhoe became the fictional Mount Doom in The Lord of the Rings movies. Now, the district hopes to bring in even more film crews by promoting its locations and connecting them with local businesses and workers.
Pauline Welch from Ruapehu District Council said the plan would help local people by improving their quality of life and creating a more varied and strong economy. She also noted that the region needs to prepare for future challenges like climate change and changes in farming and tourism.
Film Whanganui, the team helping filmmakers in the region, will now support Ruapehu as well. They will handle movie inquiries and help connect crews with places to film and people to hire—like drivers, builders, chefs, and camera teams.
Mayor Weston Kirton said films are a great way to show the world what Ruapehu has to offer. He believes the movie industry could bring in tourists and help young people start careers in film production.
Whanganui & Partners will also help the region plan for long-term growth by advising on smart ways to bring in new industries and investments.
