A massive search and rescue operation is currently taking place in the mid-Atlantic Ocean after a tourist submarine went missing during a dive to the legendary wreck of the Titanic.

The small sub, carrying five people, lost contact with the surface approximately one hour and 45 minutes into its dive, according to the US Coast Guard.

The eight-day trip, which includes dives to the Titanic wreck at a depth of 3,800 meters, costs $250,000 per ticket.

Government agencies, along with the US and Canadian navies and commercial deep-sea companies, have joined forces to assist in the rescue operation.

The missing submarine is believed to be OceanGate’s Titan submersible, a large sub comparable in size to a truck. It typically accommodates a crew of five and carries a four-day emergency supply of oxygen.
