Auckland records wettest winter on record

Auckland Airport in New Zealand has experienced its wettest year on record, with 1,513mm of rainfall up to this point in the year.

The previous record, set in 1979, was 1,502mm. A meteorologist from MetService, Lewis Ferris, noted that the increased rainfall is primarily due to the frequency of subtropical low-pressure systems approaching from the north, a pattern often intensified by La Niña.

Several extreme weather events, including the Auckland Anniversary floods and Cyclone Gabrielle, contributed to record-setting monthly rainfall totals in January and May.

Ferris also mentioned that climate change is likely contributing to more frequent and intense extreme weather events.
