Sony has taken the gaming world by surprise with the announcement of its upcoming handheld gaming device, the PlayStation Portal, which could potentially challenge the dominance of the Nintendo Switch range.

Formerly known as Project Q, the PlayStation Portal remote player is set to revolutionize handheld gaming for those who already own the PlayStation 5 (PS5) console. Gamers will have the capability to stream games directly from their PS5 consoles to the device.

While the exact release date is yet to be revealed, Sony has confirmed that the PlayStation Portal will hit the market later this year at a price of £199.99. The device aims to deliver a seamless gaming experience, allowing players to enjoy their favorite titles in the palms of their hands.

Jim Ryan, the President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, stated, “We will launch a dedicated device that enables you to stream any game from your PS5 console using Remote Play over Wi-Fi.”

The PlayStation Portal boasts an eight-inch HD screen, offering a larger display compared to the original Nintendo Switch’s 6.2-inch screen and the Switch OLED’s 7-inch display. It is equipped with all the buttons and features found on the standard PlayStation 5 DualSense wireless controller, conveniently placed on two controller halves.

One limitation is that users will only be able to stream games via Wi-Fi that have already been installed on their PS5 consoles. This unique handheld gaming device is expected to make a significant impact in the gaming community, providing gamers with a new way to enjoy their favorite titles from the PlayStation ecosystem.
