It is the second time in recent months that the Wellington Blown away sign has been changed by Wellington Airport. In order to support the World of Wearable Arts event (WOW) the sign has recently been altered to read “WOWington”, highlighting the celebration behind the Wellington fashion/arts event in the upcoming months.
Before this change the sign supported the New Zealand made vampire movie “What We Do In The Shadows” by changing the ‘W’ letter to a bright read ‘V’ spelling “Vellington”.
This change has sparked criticism from several Wellington civilians who claim that the sign has simply become a billboard for Wellington events. While the airport certifies these individuals that the sign will be changed back to Wellington Blown Away after WOW, they highlight the fact that the sign was initial purpose was to showcase the great city of Wellington.
As these major local events are huge showcases of the city themselves, the Airport spokesman Greg Thomas highlights that the changing names is exactly what the sign was intended to be used for.
The airport is a partner of the WOW event and despire criticism to their company they are excited to be able to support a unique attraction that brings both economic benefit and cultural vibrancy to Wellington.
