The world’s tallest statue has been unveiled in Gujarat, India.

The 182m high “Statue of Unity” structure is a bronze-clad tribute to the independence leader Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

It was designed by the decorated Indian sculptor Ram V Sutar.

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi said $US430 million ($NZ656m) statue would serve as a major tourist attraction.

But locals have labelled it a waste of public money saying the funds could have been put to better use.

It is nearly twice as tall as New York’s Statue of Liberty. The previous tallest statue was the Spring Temple Buddha in China at 128m.

  1. That’s… HIGH! I used to be afraid of heights but as I grew up, I’ve kinda overcome that fear. Although I’m still quite afraid of heights.
