On the 5th of March 2014, the world’s oldest person, Misao Okawa, celebrated her 116th birthday!

Misao says that her secret for such a long life has been getting enough sleep and good food.

Misao eats sushi at least once a month and makes sure that she gets at least 8 hours of sleep each night.

She has been living in a retirement home for the past 18 years. Misao believes that it is important to relax and take care of your body.

After suffering a fall at age 102 and breaking her leg, an injury which can become deadly to elderly, Misao refused to allow the injury to impact on her quality of life.

After returning to the retirement home, the staff found Misao doing squats in the hall, explaining that she was making sure her body didn’t get out of shape.

In her 116 years, Misao has lived through two world wars, the invention of the television and computer, the discovery of penicillin, the moon landing and the first mission in space.

This year there was 3 candles on Misao’s birthday cake, representing the 3 centuries she has lived through.
