A Japanese restaurant owner has purchased the most expensive bluefin tuna to date this past Saturday in Tokyo, Japan.

The 222-kilogram fish was purchased for a whopping 1.76 million dollars!

The man who bought the fish, Kiyoshi Kimura, purchased the last most expensive bluefin tuna at the same auction last year for $637,000. He uses this new fish to make sushi and sashimi at his restaurant.

Japan eats 80 per cent of the world’s bluefin tuna, where sushi is a cultural delicacy and is taken very seriously. The best pieces of sashimi –which are small, raw, thinly sliced pieces of fish– can sell for up to $24 a piece!

The population of bluefin tuna in the Atlantic and Mediterranean dropped a whopping 70 per cent  between 1997 and 2007 because of illegal overfishing.
