A tennis ball-sized diamond has been sold for US$53 million ($73 million).

The diamond was found nearly two years ago by a Vancouver-based diamond producer.

The 1109-carat stone, which is the world’s largest uncut diamond, was bought by British diamond dealer Graff Diamonds for $US47,777 per carat. The stone is named ‘Lesedi La Rona’, or ‘Our Light’ in the national language of Botswana.

It is said to be 2.5-3 billion years old.
