Car window washers who cause a nuisance have been banned by the Auckland City Council.
The new laws came into affect last week. It means that anyone washing or offering to wash as in an intimidating manner maybe arrested.
Up until now the police had no way of policing the behavour of the window washers at lights and intersections.
Under the new law street beggars are able to carry on, providing they do it passively instead of using aggressive or intimidating behaviour.
Neither the rules for car washing nor begging carry infringement notices.
It is hoped that the bylaw enables the council to work with the police who could take action against a window washer if there was a traffic safety breach.
