A devastating weather bomb has hit the Kapiti Coast, forcing many residents to evacuate the area.
Thursday’s heavy rain and flooding affected hundreds of thousands of people throughout the lower North Island, with 27 houses evacuated on the Kapiti Coast.
People living up the coast and in the Hutt Valley were stuck for hours in traffic, and faced chaotic scenes trying to get home.
Flooding on State Highways 1 and 2 was particularly bad which cut the  capital off from the country and caused major traffic chaos.
Wellington’s Civil Defence said commuters to the city today should consider an alternative route or work from home, or walk or bike to work.
MetService meteorologist John Law said there would be no let up today, with more rain forecast.

  1. I live in Lower Hutt and we had heavy rain too.Not as bad as Kapiti Coast though. The only thing that was flooded in my house was the garage which I had to clean up.
