A wasp attack at Tahunanui Beach near Nelson has left 9 people in hospital.
Whilst supervising a group from Nelson’s Victory Primary School, a 61 year old grandmother was amongst those attacked by wasps. She is currently in serious condition at Nelson Hospital.
Eight children, aged 7 and 8, were also taken to hospital with minor injuries from the attack.
Other children who were present at the time were sent to their local doctor or collected by their parents.
The children were on a school treasure hunt when they disturbed a nest on the beach.
Two ambulances were called to the scene and the school’s acting principal praised the children for being ‘calm, sensible and brave.’
Nearly 20 children were stung, some up to 6 times. The woman had a severe allergic reaction to the stings she received.
It is unclear whether the insects were bees or wasps.

Watch out for wasps out there and before going on a field experience have the place examined first for threats.
wow!! thought it would of been much more worse for that wasp attack
how sad.:(
Those children who messed with the wasps needs a little bit of discipline. For involving the innocent ones into the accident. They shouldn’t have been playing or throwing stuffs any where.
Yikes! One more reason to hate wasps!
