Waihi Mine to get bigger

The Waihi Mine has been granted permission to become bigger.

The company will be able to purchase new land.

Minister of Finance Grant Robertson and Associate Minister of Finance David Parker oversaw the decision.

The decision will help New Zealand because around 340 full-time jobs will be kept and there will be exports valued at $2 billion over the next nine years.

FACTS ABOUT THE WAIHI MINE
– The Martha Mine in Waihi is a gold mine in the New Zealand town of Waihi.
-Since July 2015 it has been owned by Australian-based OceanaGold.
-From the 1880s to 1952 the Martha Mine was an underground mine. The mine became one of the most important gold and silver mines in the world.
– The modern Martha Mine has operated as an open pit since 1987
– An average of around 2800kg of gold and 20,000kg of silver have been produced annually since 1988.
