If any of you have ever visited Auckland’s Sky Tower, you will have probably have seen the glass platform.

The platform allows you to look down to the city below with the spine-tingling realisation that all that stops you from falling to the ground is a sheet of glass.

Of course we are all told it could never break since the glass is so thick, but that’s also what they said about ‘The Ledge’ in Chicago.

The popular tourist attraction gave some Chicago visitors a scare when the observing platform cracked 412 metres above the city.

The platform’s glass sits 1.2m out from the side of the Willis Tower.

Alejandro Garibay, his brother and 2 cousins were in the glass enclosure when cracks began to race across the surface, sending the group leaping back into the building’s floor and hurrying to alert staff.

The viewing area was closed for inspection and it was quickly confirmed that only the protective coating had cracked, which covers 3 layers of 1.3cm thick glass slates.

The attraction staff assures that the public was never at risk.
