Verstappen wins Formula One title

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen has won his first Formula One title.

Verstappen passed Lewis Hamilton to win a season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The race was controversial and with Hamilton’s Mercedes appealing the result after the race.

Hamilton led by 11 seconds with only 4 laps remaining. But then a crash saw the safety car bought onto the track.
This closed up the gap and gave time for Verstappen to change his tyres. When the race restarted he was quicker than Hamilton and passed him on the final lap.

Mercedes secured the constructors’ championship for an unprecedented eighth successive year.

Verstappen ended the season with 10 wins to Hamilton’s eight. He also led more laps and taken more poles and podiums.

After 22 a record races, Verstappen had 395.5 points to Hamilton’s 387.5. Mercedes scored 613.5 to Red Bull’s 585.5.
