Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has died at the age of 58 after a nearly two-year bout with cancer.

Chavaz has been in control of Venezuela for almost 14 years.

He was a controversial figure, both in his country and the world. He was seen as a charismatic leader, who tried to take power by force, before being elected President in 1998.

He was popular with poorer people as he attempted redistribute wealth and help those less fortunate. However, many people also disagreed with his style as he was often very harsh against those who disagreed with him.

Chavaz often accused the United States of trying to interfere in his country and the region.

Hugo Chavez had been fighting cancer for more than a year. The country has declared seven days of mourning. His funeral will be on Friday.

Plans for electing a new President are expected to be announced within 30 days.
