The US Lottery has hit the highest amount in history.

The jackpot currently sits at US$1.6 billion (NZ$2.78 billion) and will be up for grabs during the next Mega Millions draw.

The lottery, to be drawn next Tuesday, climbed to the record high after no winning tickets were sold during Friday night’s draw.

It costs US$2 to play the game, but the odds of winning the jackpot are one in 302.5 million.

If a player hits all six numbers to win the jackpot, they can opt for an immediate cash payment of US$904 million ($1.2 billion) or receive the $1.6 billion prize over 29 years.

After taxes, which vary across the US, winners will generally end up with around half that amount.

  1. What they don’t tell though is that there is a lot of tax so you actually get way less, but still $1,000,000,000+ is still A LOT OF MONEY
