Latest figures obtained by the Green Party, highlight the uncleanliness and unhygienic nature of two thirds of the nations waterways. These figures, indicate that a majority of our waterways were unsafe to swim in during last years (2014) holiday season.
The report highlights that 63 out of the 166 water sites tested were ranked as poor and 46 as very poor. Not only are these statistics worrying, but the unhygienic nature of the waterways pose a immense risk to the safety of swimmers who are unaware of the health risks. As Swimmers are at a greater risk of obtaining gastrointestinal illnesses and infections.
This data does exclude rivers in Auckland, Waikato, Northland and the West coast, who use a different monitoring system. However figures from Land, Air, Water Aoteraroa website highlight that the e coli levels in Auckland rivers are the worst 25% of the country.
