The unemployment rate in New Zealand has fallen to its lowest level in more than five years.

The official figures released today show that 5.6 percent of people in New Zealand don’t have a job. This equates to 137,000 people.

The Governemnt is saying the new figures show the economy is improving with around 2.33 million people in paid employment.

Statistics New Zealand said the employment rate was growing at its fastest pace in a decade.

A large reason for this is the rebuilding of Christchurch.
