Turkey blocks Wikipedia

Turkey has blocked all access inside the country to the online encyclopaedia Wikipedia.

Turkish media said authorities had asked Wikipedia to remove content by writers “supporting terror” but the site had not responded to the demands.

Turkey has temporarily blocked social media sites including Facebook and Twitter in the past, usually following protests or terror attacks.

The Turkish government has previously denied censoring the internet, blaming outages on spikes in usage after major events.

Wikipedia has also faced censorship in other countries, including a temporary ban in Russia, and repeated crackdowns in China.

  1. this is soooo interesting!! Imagine what would happen if Wikipedia was blocked in NZ?

  2. I would move to another country if this happens in NZ! What happens if they block YouTube ?

  3. why did he do that i wonder if there going to do it in any other country

  4. i think that wiki is bad because anyone can change the info on there so lots of things could be fake on there i mean would you want to do presentation with facts that are not true

  5. finally wiki has been banned in turkey. wiki can be changed and people can put fake news on wiki so i think it was a good idea

  6. I think at the same time the Turkey government has done the right and wrong thing at the same time. Right thing: They have ignored Wikipedia on saying that Turkey has had terrorist attacks that make people think Turkey is unsafe. Wrong thing: The residents wouldn’t be able to view the important facts and needed information from Wikipedia.

  7. I Think this was a good idea because Wikipedia is not a good site. Anyone can write anything on Wikipedia

  8. I think that the decision is debatable because anyone can write on Wikipedia but on the other hand Wikipedia can be a great source of important information. Depending on your opinion Turkey and countries alike could be helping there citizens or depriving them of information.

  9. I’m absolutely surprised by this action… Why can’t they just block the sites about the terrorism, instead of banning the whole thing? I agree with Hannah, Know the residents of turkey cannot search for their needed information which comes from the Wikipedia page.

  10. I think it is a great idea because Wikipedia isn’t always accurate anyway!
