Donald Trump has announced that the US now views Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and will move its embassy there.

“Today we finally acknowledge the obvious, that Jerusalem is Israel’s capital,” he said in a statement at the White House.

He acknowledged there would be disagreement with the decision. But he said the announcement marked the beginning of a new approach to the Israel-Palestinian conflict.

Israel considers Jerusalem its eternal capital and wants all embassies based there. Currently, most nations have their embassies in Tel Aviv.

Palestinians want the capital of an independent Palestinian state to be in the Jerusalem’s eastern sector.
