A small but damaging tornado hit Tauranga last night, causing widespread damage.
The tornado hit at around 8:45pm last night and was believed to have touched down in Links Ave Mount Maunganui.
There were no reports of any injuries, but at least eight families had to leave homes that were too badly damaged to stay in overnight.
Baypark Stadium was stripped of a significant portion of its iron roof. Fortunately, the iron went to an area where there were no homes and we understand there have been no injuries on that event.
The Fire Service’s area commander for Bay of Plenty, Murray Binning, said 20 to 25 houses had been damaged in the Arataki area.
