About a dozen houses in Northland have been damaged by a tornado this morning.

Around a dozen houses in the Cooper’s Beach area have been damaged, with some roofs lifted by the tornado.

Cooper’s Beach is in Doubtless Bay, just north of Maungonui.

There are no reports of serious injuries. However, Coopers Beach residents said it was a very frightening experience. A motel worker described ducking inside to escape the wind.

Today’s weather also brought strong winds and thunderstorms to Auckland, Wellington and Marlborough Sounds, with gusts of between 100 and 120km/h.

With storms in the North, temperatures plummeted in the Southern Lakes region to -7.6 C.
