Mount Tongariro, in the central north island, has erupted with smoke pouring out of Te Maari Crater, on the western side of the mountain.
The eruption occurred shortly before 1:30pm. The eruption was essentially a large explosion, but it only lasted for a short time.
The mountain spewed some ash possibly a couple of kilometres up the air. The ash is now drifting to the east-southeast.
No large boulders or rocks were thrown into the air from the mountain.
There were a large number of people on the mountain today, many completing the Tongario Crossing, and it is believed everyone is safe.
